THE CHAMBER
History
- Four years ago, a group of African American small business owners held a series of meetings to discuss the negative impact of not being in the “current business information loop,” not being able to go to the “next level” in a successful business or not getting a proportionate share of lucrative federal, state or county contracts.
- We realized that we, as African Americans, had different levels and different kinds of procedural and technical problems to solve in order to get into the “main-stream” of the business community. Thus, the concept of establishing our own Chamber was born.
- In early 2004, we began the laborious, technical, and tedious process of formulating the Chamber entity by completing the federal (IRS); State and local paperwork required to establish a 501 C 6 organization (Chambers). We decided to “tailor” our Chamber to resolve some of the special problems voiced in our meetings.
